SoNu Water
Flavored Water With Vitamins & Electrolytes, Organic & Kosher Certified
CAPSULE REPORT: Soft drinks are the fastest-growing category of specialty foods. Mass-marketed, high fructose corn syrup drink sales are flat; consumers are showing their interest in “better for you” soft drinks. SoNu is in the right place at the right time. Its fruit-flavored waters are vitamin- and electrolyte-enhanced, certified USDA organic and certified kosher by OU. They’re like light juice drinks—the flavor and sweetness of juice with way fewer calories.
Overview
Looking for a better enhanced water drink? Want to get your RDA (recommended daily amount) of vitamin C from a refreshing fruit-flavored drink that also packs in some electrolytes, which help with hydration, blood pH, nerve and muscle function? You’ll also get 20% of your RDA of B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid) B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cyanocobalamin), and the electrolytes calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and potassium bicarbonate. There’s no fat or sodium; each 8-ounce serving contains 45 calories, or 90 calories per 16-ounce bottle, from the organic evaporated cane juice that sweetens the beverage.
SoNu Water Flavors
There are six SoNu flavors:
- Blueberry/Pear, our favorite, tasting delightfully of blueberry and honeydew
- Lemon/Tangerine (didn’t sample)
- Mango/Peach (a favorite among some tasters)
- Pomegranate/Açaí (didn’t sample)
- Strawberry/Cranberry, tasting nicely of strawberry and melon
- Tropical/Passion Fruit, tasting pleasantly of ambiguous mixed fruit, but not passionfruit, to which mango and orange flavors are added

The fruit flavor profiles are light but sweet—juice lite, as it were, with enough flavor and sweetness to satisfy one’s need for a sweet drink.
While design is a subjective topic, the bottle design is surprising, not what we would think of as healthy and organic, and it probably doesn’t help the brand. The jet-black color (which appears lighter in these photos) seems to belong to an energy drink or a beverage targeted to young males. The snow motif places one on the ski slopes when the fruits should put one on sunny beaches. The fact that the drink is organic—a key differentiator—should be highlighted instead of buried at the bottom. The “o” of SoNu, made of two abstract boomerangs (or vertical Nike swooshes), doesn’t help people who don’t know the brand immediately say “SoNu.” Obviously, the SoNu staff likes it, but if it doesn’t look right to you, don’t let that stop you from enjoying what might become a favorite refreshment.
