The creator of this gorgeous cupcake, Cupcake Nouveau of Miami, has provided a design template: Add a ribbon and a flower to a plain cupcake, and it looks like a million dollars. Be sure to use organic flowers (no pesticides) that are nonpoisonous (check online for "edible flowers"). Photo courtesy CupcakeNouveau.com.

Cupcake Decorating Ideas

Transform Any Cupcake With These Cupcake Toppings

What’s the easiest-to-make crowd-pleasing dessert? Store-bought cupcakes with your own special touch! If you want to bake your own cupcakes, we have ideas for that as well. This is Page 1 of a three-page article, with more than 50 cupcake decorating ideas. Click on the black links below to visit other pages—and be sure to visit them, as the photos get better and better.

BAKING ITEMS

  • Baking chocolate (use sweetened chocolate, or chocolate bars), shaved into curls (see photo below); thicker bars are easier to shave
  • Candied violets & other flowers
  • Candy Confetti (in dozens of shapes, from stars to dinosaurs to holiday themes)
  • Chocolate Chips: regular or  mini
  • Coconut: plain or toasted
  • Other chips: mint, peanut butter, mixed chips
  • Crystallized ginger

Sprinkles are the easiest cupcake decorating idea. Beyond the jimmies of our childhood, sprinkles now come in many shapes. Photo courtesy Crumbs.com.
Shaving chocolate curls is another easy way to make glamorous cupcakes. Mix and match dark, milk and white chocolate curls with icing color. Photo courtesy Tizzerts.com.

CAKE & COOKIE DECORATIONS

Shops and websites that sell cake decorating items have pre-formed chocolate shapes (like those in the photo at right) and many other items that make you look like a cake-decorating expert.

  • Chocolate
  • Dragées (silver, gold and other color balls—pronounced drah-ZHAY)
  • Fondant (Wilton sells four-color fondant packages in primary and neon colors)
  • Sanding Sugar
  • Sprinkles: so many colors and shapes (oblong, dots, etc.)

Dragées, round balls of sugar, are available
in every color—including glamorous gold and
silver—plus dragées that look like pearls.
