Momma Reiner’s Fudge

And Jumbo, Fudge-Dipped Marshmallows

CAPSULE REPORT: One of our favorite discoveries of the year is the fudge-covered marshmallow made by Momma Reiner. This fudgemaker took the next step and dipped jumbo handmade marshmallows in her semisweet chocolate fudge. The result: A star is born. Buy them as gifts for everyone you know with a sweet tooth.

We first met Momma Reiner through her fudge, then fell in love with her jumbo, fudge-covered marshmallows.

Momma Reiner evokes a granny with glasses, but Kimberly Reiner is anything but. She got the name when she was the first of her crowd to have a baby; but perhaps the name works to her advantage—there’s trust in fudge made by grannies. And, the fudge-making tradition began with her own grandmother. What began as a home enterprise, stirring fudge on the kitchen stove and delivering it to local shops, has grown into a leased commercial kitchen with business accounts and mail-order customers nationwide. Her labels still say “homemade in a little kitchen on a little street in a little village by the sea” (Pacific Palisades, California). We’ll trust Momma, who is also an attorney, to know at what point that claim needs to be changed to something else.

Fudge-Dipped Marshmallows

These jumbo marshmallows, shown in the photo at right, start with a delicious vanilla marshmallow, hand-dipped in bittersweet chocolate fudge. They are one of the most popular treats to pass through THE NIBBLE offices in a while. The marshmallow is of such quality that it would be a treat in of itself, but the concept of dipping it in fudge is pure inspiration. It’s probably less of a leap in logic if you’re a fudgemaker, but we don’t know anyone else who has made the leap.

While each is handmade and thus shaped differently, they range up to 2 inches square by 1½ inches high. They’re so big that one should be more than satisfying, but so good that the temptation is to have another.

Marshmallows covered in semisweet chocolate fudge. What a great idea!

Momma Reiner’s fudge has a distinct point of view: not squares or bars, but 2-inch diameter coins or disks of fudge. In addition to nibbling fudge, you can use them to top an ice cream sundae or a cupcake; the truly wicked will make fudge sandwiches with fillings that range from raspberry jam to whipped cream to ganache. The fudge has a sweet, dairy quality—is made of semisweet or white chocolate, sugar, butter, evaporated milk and vanilla.

In truth, this fudge is not as complex as John Kelly Fudge, which comes in 10 flavors, with or without nuts. While we’d certainly enjoy any box that came our way, the marshmallows are unforgettable.

So while you’re planning your holiday gifts lists, birthday lists, house gifts, etc.—think about adding our name to the list. All we have left is the empty tin proclaiming “Momma Reiner’s Fudge Dipped Marshmallows—and the memories.
