A Food tip of the day

Flavored Mustards

Flavored mustards can transform a dish, adding almost no calories but intense notes of tarragon, basil, Roquefort or lemon to your sandwich, vinaigrette, potato salad or charcuterie. Or create a delicious crust on chicken, fish, beef, lamb or pork. Think of classic Dijon as vanilla, and start to expand your mustard horizons. We love the Laurent du Clos line of French mustards, and the Anton Kozlik line from Canada is a truly eye-opening experience as to the heights mustard can ascend. Click here for our review of Anton Kozlik.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What’s The Difference Between “Bottled Water,” “Spring Water” And “Mineral Water?”

“Bottled Water” refers to any water sold in a sealed, sanitary container. It can be still, carbonated, and/or flavored. The majority of bottled water sold is “commodity water,” filtered or “purified” tap water (read more about the difference between commodity water and naturally bottled water). Spring water is water taken from a natural spring, as is mineral water. The difference between the two is the amount of Total Dissolved Solids, minerals and trace elements present. A high number will give the water a unique taste and therapeutic value. Mineral water can occur naturally or can be prepared, and can be still or effervescent and/or flavored. Read more about the types of water in our Water Glossary.

WELCOME...

to a very special food magazine. Whether you’re a foodie or just like good food, a connoisseur or someone who wants to learn more...we write THE NIBBLE for you.

When you face a wall of 15 brands of gourmet olive oil and vinegar...expensive chocolates and cheeses...20 types of sea salt, dozens of gourmet preserves, tea and other specialties...how do you know what’s good versus what’s great? There are incredible gourmet foods that never make it into food shops—the best smoked hams, amazing cookies and other products—but how do you find them?

Find “The Best of the Best” Specialty Foods

THE NIBBLE is your personal scout, telling you about the new, the noteworthy and the amazing specialty foods and gourmet foods. We save you time and money by tasting more than 3,000 products each year. We then review only the most special of these specialty items...most of which can transform basic foods just by opening the jar. You don’t have to know how to cook (beyond basic boiling and broiling). And you don’t have to be a gourmet or have a lavish lifestyle, since most of the foods we write about are perfect for everyday meals and affordable by just about anyone. The products are generally available by mail order, so you can get them no matter where you live.

An Overview Of The Nibble

This is the home page of The Nibble, "Great Food Finds," a gourmet food magazine and website for people who love to eat and drink the very best specialty foods. It focuses on product reviews of specialty foods and beverages, with detailed education, related product recipe and shopping information. We are not a restaurant review or a cooking technique and recipe website; but people who seek that kind of information will enjoy what they find here. In addition to the monthly magazine, which is read online at this website, there is a Top Pick Of The Week e-newsletter (a.k.a. e-zine, ezine or zine) available by email. We also value our readers’ opinions, and periodically offer online surveys powered by Survey Gizmo.

The gourmet food we review can help you put together exciting meals for any course—for an everyday menu or entertaining menu, for a party or a special event. They include specialty food items for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, plus cocktails and snacks. Whether you’re looking for appetizers, entrees or desserts, we’ve tasted them, weeded out the average, and recommend those that are worth your time and money.

The gourmet food we review includes artisanal and specialty food products. Product reviews include:

You can see the full list of gourmet food products in our Main Reviews section.

We also write product reviews of gourmet and specialty beverages including:

Other areas of our culinary content include food history, origin and background (We have more than 40 food glossaries and other reference materials); gourmet food events and food and wine travel and other leisure activities, cookbooks and other food-related books; gourmet housewares, kitchen appliances and equipment; tableware including dishes, glasses and serving pieces.

Most of the products we write about can be purchased for gifts, including hostess gifts and corporate gifts.

Our readers include the foodie, food lover, fine food enthusiast and fan of the gourmet lifestyle—the connoisseur as well as the student who wants to learn about gourmet food. We have thousands of product reviews for those who love to shop for gourmet foods online. Although we provide access to convenient online shopping, we do not accept fees or commissions from merchants. Our reviews are based on our opinion that these are “the best of the best” products. If we write about it, we would spend our own money on it. Please read our About Us section for more information. We look forward to sharing our product recommendations and reference materials with you.
