Gleneagles Natural Spring Water
Spring Water From Scotland
CAPSULE REPORT: If you’re a golfer, you know Gleneagles, the golf mecca. If you follow international politics, you’ll recall Gleneagles as the site of The Gleneagles Agreement to discourage apartheid in sports, unanimously approved by the Commonwealth of Nations in 1977. Gleneagles Natural Spring Water is named because its point of effluence is in the famous village of Gleneagles. The water is popular for several reasons: Its gorgeous modern styling looks great on any table and it has a pure, flavorless profile that many people seek.
Gleneagles Natural Spring water is the result of heavy rainfall in the Gleneagles Valley. The rain engenders rainbows, which inspired the bottle design, called “Beneath The Rainbow” (there’s a full-color rainbow on every bottle). The real rainbows crown an area of great natural beauty, with picturesque, heather-covered hills. To protect the purity of the water, the water source in the Ochil Hills has been assiduously protected from human, agricultural and industrial pollution.
The hills are around 400 million years old, made of layers of red sandstone and basalt. They provide a natural filter for the rainwater that falls to earth. Gleneagles is a young water: It takes that rain just 15 years to percolate through the rock strata into the deep caverns from which it is pumped. With 235mg/liter of Total Dissolved Solids (i.e., the total amount of salts and minerals absorbed from the rocks), Gleneagles is on the borderline of spring water and mineral water.* It’s still on the spring water side, in that there isn’t enough TDS to taste salts or minerals in the water. It’s what many people look for: a “pure” water flavor.

Gleneagles is owned by Highland Spring Ltd, the number one brand of mineral water in the U.K. Whereas Highland Spring is packaged in a traditional water bottle, Gleneagles has one of the most stylish bottles on the market. Its slender, modern, skyscraper appearance has earned several design awards since its introduction in 1996, including the British Bottlers’ Institute Gold Award for presentation (1999) and the Gold Medal for packaging at the 2002 Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting and Competition, where Gleneagles also took home the Silver Medal in the sparkling water category.
