Muschie's Granola Bar
Muschies’s granola bar may look petite in the photo, but these jumbo bars are the size of an index card. Photography by Hannah Kaminsky | THE NIBBLE.

Granola Bars

Metropolitan Bakery

First ingredient: oats. Chewy, with a lot of oats, seeds, and nuts. Another minimally-processed bar that actually has enough dried fruit for me. Nice spice presence that doesn’t overwhelm. Recommended. No nutrition information. MetropolitanBakery.com

Muschie’s High Energy Granola Bars

“Hand Rolled Local Ingredients.” All bars are 5 ounces each; manufacturer states that one bar equals 2 servings. First ingredient in all bars: organic rolled oats. All bars have a very good grain and seed presence, with a texture like a softer, thick oatmeal cookie. (Photo above.) All contain a good amount of dried fruit, as well, with nice bursts of fruit flavor. The bars are very buttery, except for the vegan Goji Berry & Pears. MuschiesBakedGoods.com

  Metropolitan Bakery
  • Fruit Medley. Slightly too sweet. Per 1/2 bar (2.5 oz.): 310 calories, 130 calories from fat, 4g saturated fat, 15mg cholesterol, no sodium, 4g fiber, 14g sugars, 5g protein.
  • Fruit Medley (No Nuts). Too sweet. Per 1/2 bar (2.5 oz.): 300 calories, 100 calories from fat, 4g saturated fat, 15mg cholesterol, no sodium, 5g fiber, 15g sugars, 5g protein.
  • Goji Berry & Pears. The dried pear chunks, something I haven’t seen much of in other granola bars, are an especially nice addition here. This bar doesn’t seem as sweet as the first two. Recommended.
  • Orchard’s Gift. Per 1/2 bar (2.5 oz.): 300 calories, 100 calories from fat, 4g saturated fat, 15mg cholesterol, no sodium, 5g fiber, 15g sugars, 5g protein. Not as sweet as either Fruit Medley Bar. Recommended.

Natural Ovens Bakery Great Granola Bars (Mixed Fruit)

“0 g Trans Fat, 400 mg Omega-3.” First ingredient: Natural Ovens Great Granola (the first ingredient of that is rolled oats). In appearance, this bar resembles a soft, thick, bar cookie. It tastes like a raisin-spice cookie. If you didn’t know otherwise, you’d say these contained no oats. There’s some apple presence and the raisins are noticeable, but the other dried fruits are not. The spice flavor stays with you for a long time. Not bad, but slightly too sweet. Per bar (40g): 150 calories, 25 calories from fat, 0.5g saturated fat, no cholesterol, 140mg sodium, 2g fiber, 13g sugars, 4g protein. NaturalOvens.com
