Sumo Gourmet Fortune Cookies
Your Fortune Is: You Have Just Discovered A Jumbo Fortune Cookie Gift
CAPSULE REPORT: We receive a lot of sweets, and have seen jumbo fortune cookies before, but were still charmed by the quality of Sumo Cookies. They look great and taste great, are just large enough to feast upon but not “too much,” and can contain a reasonably lengthy message. If only we could order one at the end of a good Chinese dinner, instead of the sad little plastic-wrapped cookies that have ceased to bear any fortune at all—neither gastronomic enjoyment nor hopeful prognostication. With Sumo Cookies, one can have it all.
Fortune cookies used to be so much fun. As a freebie at the end of a Chinese dinner, many people never ate them, but enjoyed the ritual of cracking open the cookie to read their fortune. Perhaps because they ceased to count as important food, the quality of the cookies, in our neck of the woods at least, have declined to something approximating cellulose. Gone is the vanilla flavor; gone is any reason to ingest the poor cookie. Given that the “fortunes” have long since ceased to amuse, we try to return the cookies as soon as they are brought to the table. But even the waiters don’t want them back.
Striking a blow for the reputation of the fortune cookie, Sumo Cookies prove that you can make a gourmet fortune cookie, and have a lot of fun in the process. The company specializes in jumbo fortune cookie gifts, with your custom message inside. You can do more than say "Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations”: You can include an entire poem, should you wish.
There are 20 preset styles, all tempting (well, we’re not sure we’d want to get the Cotton Candy Sumo, but we’re older than the target market):
- Classic: With a variety of colorful sprinkles or jimmies (including vibrant pink), or simply drizzled
- Candy: Butterfinger, M&Ms, Snickers
- Family Favorites: Cookies & Cream, German Chocolate, Seven Layer, Triple Mint
- Nuts: Caramel Cashew, Pecan, Southern Pecan Turtle
- Wedding: An all-white bride, and a
Candy and cookie in one: The Sumo with M&Ms,
covered in semisweet chocolate and drizzled in
white chocolate. Because the quality of the Felchlin chocolate is so fine, the cookie is not cloying.
The cookies are the size of a small honeydew melon, approximately 5 inches by 7 inches. The chocolate used is from Felchlin, a Swiss producer of some of the world’s finest chocolate bars and couverture.
Fortune Cookie Flavors
If you don’t like the preset styles, create your own. First you choose from a semisweet or white chocolate icing, then a decoration:
- Jimmies (white or rainbow)
- Baby Shower
- Over The Hill
- Fall Leaves
- Independence Day (red, white and
- Spring Flowers
|Candy is dandy...even more so when it spills out of the fortune cookie, like a cookie piñata. Sumo shown with confetti topping.
There are also Stuffed Sumos, with an assortment of Hershey‘s candies inside. While the company advises against shipping because the rattling candy inside can cause breakage, ours arrived just fine, as you can see in the photo above.
We liked the idea of Sumos for corporate gifts: sales calls, department meetings, new product promotions, trade show raffles, etc. Having been on the receiving line of so many corporate gifts, this one not only can be shared with others; it will live in memory, while the pen, Post-It cube, mug, etc. have not registered in memory long enough to be forgotten.
If you’d like to try making your own fortune cookies (standard size), here’s a recipe, plus the history of the fortune cookie.
