Now there’s a headline for Variety...and maybe even a sitcom, if Lula Belle, a.k.a. actor Amy Landers, gets her toffee into the hands of the right people. Amy’s talent, not her toffee, got her roles on “Days of Our Lives” and “Frasier”; but sending silver tins of her toffee to agents, publicists, and celebrities, sure helped her stand out.

Amy was working at a gift shop in Studio City while seeking acting gigs. She convinced the owner to sell her homemade toffee for the holidays, and the rest is history. Lula Belle Southern Pecan Toffee has gotten nationwide attention, and Amy has the sweetest “day job” in the industry.

The toffee is special for two reasons: it’s pecan toffee, not the traditional almond. The naturally sweeter meat of the pecan adds lilt to the candy: an inspired variation. (The pecans do come from Amy’s native Georgia, and from nearby Virginia).

Second, the toffee comes in three flavors of chocolate coating. While other producers make milk and dark chocolate varieties, the white chocolate is most welcome. While the dark chocolate had the deepest chocolate flavor of any chocolate toffees we’ve tasted to date, our favorite was the white chocolate. It would make a great wedding favor instead of today’s questionable gift of choice, a CD (although a largely unappreciated CD of someone else’s favorite music is a lesser evil over teeth-cracking Jordan almonds).

The silver tins are tied with a green organza ribbon and fabric flowers—something Scarlett O’Hara might have worn around her waist. Judging from customers like Sandra Bullock and Allison Janney, it is possible to enjoy this treat without adding inches to yours.
