Fairytale Brownies makes 14 different flavors, enough of a choice to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth. Shown, top to bottom: Walnut, Chocolate Chunk and Caramel.
CAPSULE REPORT: Fairytale Brownies makes 14 flavors of chocolate brownie, from the classic to flavors such Coconut, Espresso Nib and Raspberry Swirl (our favorite flavor is the Toffee Crunch Brownie). There’s attractive packaging for every holiday and occasion, that customizes your message (Happy Birthday, Congratulations). The brownies are individually wrapped for freshness and are certified kosher. The brownies are made with fine Callebaut chocolate but are on the sweet side. Kids will love them; adults who prefer less sugar in their recipes may find them a bit on the sweet side. The company also makes a sugar-free brownie, Magic Morsels.
Fairytale Brownies is a great marketing company. They know brownies can be a snack or a dessert...that they are beloved by adults and kids alike. They know that people love to give as well as get moist, chewy brownies. They’ve developed very attractive gift packaging with a choice of appropriate message and design for almost every occasion. They use Callebaut, a top Belgian chocolate, and they make a dozen different flavors from fruity to nutty. They have sugar-free options for people who can’t have sugar. And they’re really nice people.
They make a very sweet style of brownie, using a 49-year-old “secret” family recipe. If your sweet tooth emphasizes sweet, you will enjoy these rich, chewy brownies. We, who prefer our chocolate at the 70% cacao level or higher (i.e., more chocolate, less sugar), find them a bit too sweet. But they have many fans, and we found that when we had them with ice cream or with unsweetened coffee or tea, they hit the spot.
In fact, the more we pondered them—the name Fairytale, their proclamation as “The Greatest Brownies in all of Fairyland,” and the smiling elf on the shrink wrap that keeps each brownie fresh for days and days—we thought that these treats were probably best targeted to younger palates rather than true foodies whose tastes have been shaped by great chocolatiers and the patissiers at the finest restaurants. So, we heartily recommend them as Kids’ Gourmet—because with the dark Callebaut Belgian chocolate, premium Grade AA butter, farm-fresh eggs, and cake flour, these are a far, far better brownies than most.
Our favorite, Toffee Crunch, has large pieces of toffee set in to the brownie.
Crumbly on the outside, but moist in the center, each 3-inch square brownie has its own flair:
Original Brownie: This brownie packs in the classic chocolate flavor with a fudge-like consistency in the center.
Caramel Brownie: Extra sweet because of the gooey swirls of caramel.
Chocolate Chip Brownie: Chocolate morsels make this brownie extra sweet. Microwave this one so that the melted chips give an extra smooth consistency.
Chocolate Chunk Blondie: A brown sugar blondie packed with chocolate chunks, no nuts. The Pecan Blondie (see below) has no chocolate chips, but lots of nuts.
Coconut Brownie: The shreds of coconut on the top give this brownie a crunchy texture. The coconut flakes are very light in flavor so the chocolate is still the star of this one.
Espresso Nib Brownie: An espresso-flavored brownie filled with crushed cacao nibs. We haven’t tasted this one, but the complexity of flavors sounds promising.
Mint Chocolate Brownie: We liked this one the best out of the dozen because the mint flavor balanced the rich chocolate taste. You know this one is mint without having to think too hard about it.
Peanut Butter Brownie: You can taste the fragrant nuttiness of this brownie, but it doesn’t have an overwhelming taste of peanut butter (not a cloyingly sweet Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup). Spread some extra chunky peanut butter or a strawberry jam over it to excite your taste buds.
Pecan Blondie: This blondie has no chocolate chips, but lots of fresh pecan halves.
Pecan Brownie: A quality nut flavor and nice option for those who don’t like walnuts.
Raspberry Swirl Brownie: The raspberry flavor is very faint: we wish it were more prominent.
Toffee Crunch Brownie: Our favorite flavor: crunchy, nutty, and chocolaty, the most complex yet the most balanced of the flavors. Have this with a scoop of coffee-based ice cream.
Walnut Brownie: The classic nut brownie.
White Chocolate Brownie: There is not a lot of white chocolate flavor here; the “white chocolate” is largely delivered through stripes of icing across the top of a chocolate brownie, with some white chips inside.
Alas, the Amaretto Brownies, a favorite from our original review, infused with a lovely almond undertone, is not currently offered.
You can choose an assorted gift box, which is a good idea because there’s “something for everyone”; or you can make up your own assortment. The brownies come in attractive gift boxes. Whether it’s the fall season, a birthday, or Chanukah, you can personalize the occasion. Whatever you decide, the recipient will be thrilled that you sent it.
