Hors d’Oeuvres & Cocktail Snacks
Plus Delicious Recipes For Quick & Easy Hors D’Oeuvre
Overview
Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away were we actually content to serve blue taco chips and bean dip...a Brie with currant jelly and almond glaze, or (horrors!) cocktail franks and honey mustard, and think we were presenting our guests with a special treat?
That was before we discovered the world of specialty foods, and the wonderful treats that awaited us. There are so many great products out there that you can throw several parties a week, serve quick and easy fancy hors d’oeuvres, and never serve the same thing twice. Let us know if you’d like to nominate your favorite cocktail nibble, use the Contact Us link on this page.
Hors d’Oeuvre vs. Hors d’Oeuvres
In French, the plural of hors d’oeuvre is hors d’oeuvre—no extra “s.” It’s the same word whether there’s one or many. Americans add the “s”; but if you want to show your superior knowledge, leave it off.

Nibble Tip
How many hors d’oeuvre do you need to plan per person for cocktails if you’re serving dinner afterward? What if it’s a cocktail party with no dinner to follow?
The rule is 4 to 6 per person with a dinner party, 8 to 10 for cocktails only. See the handy chart from Black Tie Hors d’Oeuvre.
