One Drop Gourmet
This line is excellent; working against it is packaging that looks a bit like a hardware store product, instead of something so luscious, you’d want to eat it by the spoonful. We admit the packaging prejudiced us...until that first taste. Original BBQ Sauce is a classic blend of tomato, brown sugar and smoke with the tiniest buzz of heat. Coffee BBQ Sauce has a rich, round coffee flavor (it’s decaf, for those who avoid caffeine). Appropriate for a Florida company, there’s an Orange Blossom BBQ Sauce that dances with orange blossom honey, orange peel and a mild level of spice. It’s as if you marinated your food in orange juice, honey and peppercorns. Each flavor is charming in its own way.
INGREDIENTS: Water, tomato concentrate, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard seed, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, spices, liquid smoke, peppers, canola oil, xanthan gum. CALORIES: One tablespoon (17g), 30 calories.

Smoke Master BBQ Sauce
This line, produced in northeast Florida, was controversial at our judges’ table. “A Revolutionary Experience In Barbeque,” proclaims the bottle. For sure, it’s like no other BBQ sauce we’ve tasted at the specialty food shows where we hang out. Sweet and thin, we’d use it as a sauce for vegetables, rice, potatoes or eggs, use it as a dip and a spicy salad dressing, mix it into deviled eggs...but it’s too sweet to put on our meat. Recognizing that some folks prefer a sauce with a sweet profile, we think Smoke Master is an interesting line to try. The basic recipe is a Carolina sweet-style sauce. There are five varieties from which to choose. Original Sweet is mild and sweet, Roasted Onion & Red Pepper has crunchy bits of onion and very mild heat.
INGREDIENTS: Tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, sugar, apple cider vinegar, molasses, water, mustard seed, corn syrup, pasteurized cream, turmeric, salt, garlic powder, black pepper, xanthan, spice, natural flavoring. Roasted Onion & Pepper adds roasted onion, toasted bell pepper and onion powder. CALORIES: Two tablespoons, 45 calories.

Less of a classic sauce, more of a sweet dressing, this sauce was nevertheless popular with a number of our tasters. Photo by Saidi Granados.

Taste Of Tassleberry Strawberry BBQ Sauce
Tassleberry Farm, which grows strawberries in upstate New York, makes distinctive strawberry condiments. The Strawberry Marinade and Strawberry Jerk Sauce were winners in our first Best Barbecue Sauces article. This year, the new Strawberry BBQ Sauce scores with an unusual barbecue sauce for strawberry lovers. A thick, tangy strawberry paste, this complex sauce adds sweetness the right way—with lots of fresh fruit.
INGREDIENTS: Pickled strawberries, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, brown sugar, onions, butter, garlic, liquid smoke, sweet smoked paprika, ginger, cinnamon, mustard. CALORIES: Two tablespoons, 60 calories.
