Best Barbecue Sauce

Page 2: More Best BBQ Sauce

This is Page 2 of a four-page article on the best barbecue sauces. Click on the black links below to read the other pages. See Part I, Part II and Part III of our best barbecue sauce series for other favorites, including kosher and sugar-free barbecue sauces.

Grumpy’s Private Reserve BBQ Sauce

We taste a lot of “award winning” barbecue sauces that are OK, but not standouts. Grumpy’s BBQ Sauce is an award-winning line of sauces that does stand out. Each of the four sauces—Black Label, Bold XX, Goodnight Loving and Not So Bold—gets at least an honorable mention from our tough-as-nails reviewers. however, Goodnight Loving was the flavor that really spoke to us. The think sauce is not cloying (as so many thick barbecue sauces are), so we were able to taste the chicken flavor of our free-range Murray’s chicken instead of only tasting sauce. Goodnight Loving has a pleasant, creeping heat that gives the sauce a nice bite, balanced by a nice sweetness and a lasting finish.

And, the cute pig graphics win the “best label” award.

INGREDIENTS: Tomato paste (tomatoes), brown sugar, cider vinegar, water, hot sauce (aged cayenne red peppers, vinegar, water, salt, garlic powder), liquid smoke (purified natural wood smoke, water), worcestershire sauce (vinegar, molasses, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, anchovies, water, onions, salt, tamarind concentrate, cloves, natural flavorings, chili pepper extract), black pepper, kosher salt, garlic powder, spices, chili powder, cayenne pepper, onion powder, oriental hot mustard (mustard, turmeric)  CALORIES: 2 tablespoons, 33 calories.

Jube’s BBQ

Jube’s BBQ in northern Arizona sells barbecue-to-go and offers full-service catering. The website offers an array of barbecue sauces and marinades, but to us the standout is the flavor called San Francisco 1906. A little taste will shake up your world—although it won’t reach 8.25 on the Richter Scale.

The sauce is both heavy on the mustard and flavor. Before you dismiss this sauce on the grounds that you don’t really care for mustard, give it a shot—you may well be surprised. The balance of sweet and spicy is on point and actually intensifies when cooked (we first taste products straight from the jar). The mustardy overtones mixed with onion and garlic may well overcome objections of those who think they don’t like mustard.

The other flavors have alluring names; two examples are Chicago 1871 and Mrs. O’Leary. They’re all perfectly find, but don’t stand out among all the barbecue sauce we taste. Why anyone wants to name food products after horrific disasters is another question.

INGREDIENTS: Water, light brown sugar, cider vinegar, ketchup (tomato concentrate, red ripe tomatoes, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder), yellow mustard (distilled vinegar, water, mustard seed, salt; contains less than 2% of the following: turmeric, paprika, spice, garlic powder), soy sauce (water, wheat, soybeans, salt, sodium benzoate) chicken bouillon (salt, sugar, corn starch, monosodium glutamate, beef fat, hydrolyzed corn protein, dried chicken meat, maltodextrin, autolyzed yeast extract, chicken fat, silicon dioxide, dehydrated parsley, disodium inosinate, citric acid, onion powder, natural flavor, colors (yellow 5, annatto, yellow 6)) garlic powder. CALORIES: 2 teaspoons, 35 calories.
