Cows grazing at Straus Family Creamery, overlooking Tomales Bay in Marin County, California. In 1993, the farm became the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi River. You can find their products at Whole Foods Markets nationwide.
We love organic milk and everything made from it: We support our local, small organic dairy farmers and hope you will, too. Visit SmallDairy.com and LocalHarvest.org to find organic dairies near you. And feel free to recommend some of your favorite organic or all-natural dairy products using the Contact Us link on this page.
The first organic product most households purchase is milk. Not only is it hormone free—it tastes so much better because the cows eat better feed and are free to graze on tasty grass, which affects the flavor of the milk.
If you have a choice of organic brands, try to support local small farmers instead of large, national brands, some of which are involved in “feedlot” controversy. Their operations are so huge that the cows don’t enjoy access to free grazing in pasture any more than conventional milk cows. Your milk should come from happy, exercised cows that enjoy a good lifestyle, not from confined animals whose milk is called “organic” simply because they eat organic feed and aren’t treated with antibiotics.
