CAPSULE REVIEW: Organic lollipops—what a concept! Invented by parents who couldn’t find lollipops for their children that weren’t filled with chemical color dyes, artificial flavors and high fructose corn syrup, these “pure” and yummy lollies have been flying off the shelves. Parents, no doubt, have been “testing” them as well, so now there’s a line of stickless drops for adults. The company is always developing new flavors—check the website.
Some candy companies make gourmet lollipops, but most of what is out there is pretty junky stuff. Yet kids love them, and even dentists give them away (a business-building device, no doubt). When children clamor for treats, you can feel good about handing out these: made from natural fruit extracts, organic evaporated cane juice and natural colorings instead of chemical color dyes (purple carrots and red cabbage are used to create the berry and pink watermelon colors, turmeric and annatto create the yellows and oranges).
They do taste different from artificially-flavored lollipops, and thankfully, are less sweet as well. Cheeky Lemon, Orange Squeeze and Pomegranate Pucker are nicely tart. Wet-Face Watermelon (we’re trying to figure out the name vis-à-vis a lollipop) is more middle-of-the-road, for those who don’t like to pucker. Razzmatazz Berry is almost raspberry, but its flavor profile needs some sharpening.
