Ultimate Beer
By Michael Jackson
For too many years, beer served as the redheaded stepchild to wine in the world of adult beverages. While wine enthusiasts gushed about this vintage and that vineyard or spent countless hours fretting over which wine to serve with that night’s fish, beer aficionados were few and far between. Even those with a professed love of beer were easily dismissed—at least in the United States —by the all-too-true argument that all beers taste the same. Now, with the onslaught of quality domestic microbrews, as well as a more aggressive effort to import foreign beers, beer’s status has been elevated. Leading the bangwagon is British author Michael Jackson, who has spent much of his career enlightening the masses to the joys of hops. This coffee table-sized book is among his best efforts, as he presents individual chapters on the various styles of beer brewed throughout the world. Lavishly illustrated, this book also has a chapter detailing what style of beer to serve with what food— just likes its wine brethren.
