Overview

Years ago, vegans lived on vegetables, tofu, grains, fruits and nuts. Today, vegans can eat as well as the rest of society— much better, in fact, when you look at the high-saturated-fat diet most Americans consume.

Many famous people in history may have been vegans, but we only know about famous vegetarians. The word “vegan” was coined in 1944 by a British vegetarian couple, Donald and Dorothy Watson, founders of the Vegan Society. Before then, those eating special diets on compassionate or health-focused grounds were simply called vegetarians.

The earliest records of vegetarianism are found in ancient India and Greece. A choice of vegetarian diet, promoted by religious groups and philosophers, was connected with the idea of nonviolence toward animals.

Vegan Celebrities

Famous vegetarians in history include the ancient Greeks Plato, Pythagoras and Plutarch; Leonardo da Vinci, Martin Luther, Sir Isaac Newton, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Hans Christian Andersen, Charlotte Bronte, Henry David Thoreau, Susan B. Anthony, Leo Tolstoy, Vincent Van Gogh, George Bernard Shaw, Albert Schweitzer, Albert Einstein and H. G. Wells.

Einstein (1879-1955) said, “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” He said it more than 50 years before climate change became a concept—but then, he was a genius.

Today, veganism has become more mainstream due to adoption by celebrities in the entertainment industry. Pamela Anderson, Casey Affleck, Gillian Anderson, Ed Begley, Jr., Jennifer Connelly, James Cromwell, Ted Danson,  Daryl Hannah, Woody Harrelson, Alyssa Milano, Moby, Sinéad O'Connor, Kevin Nealon, Joaquin Phoenix, Natalie Portman, Alicia Silverstone, Russell Simmons, Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood are a few advocates.

And according to this past Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, so is world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson (see a list of celebrity vegans).

Try it one day a week. It’s easy to do your part to save the planet.

MORE TO DISCOVER

Other Products Tasted

  • Vegan Black Pepper Steaks In Black Pepper Sauce: Very hot and peppery. The sauce could be more complex, less sweet.
  • Vegan Citrus Sparerib Cutlets In Plum Vinegar Sauce: The cutlets are very smoky—more so than spare ribs, but a very nice flavor. There was no sign of vinegar in the plum vinegar sauce; just an overly-sweet sauce. Before you eat this dish, drain the sauce and mix it with a bit of balsamic or wine vinegar.
  • Vegan Shrimp: Needs more shrimp flavor.
