Hit a Monster Double with this medium-hot sauce, made with tomatillos, green jalapeños and other chiles. All photography by Evan Dempsey | THE NIBBLE. |
WHAT IT IS: Gourmet hot sauce, made in small batches. |
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: It’s all natural with great flavors in all four heat levels. The texture is beautiful—thick from the fresh chiles used to make it. And, oh yes, it’s made by a Major League Baseball player. |
WHY WE LOVE IT: This is not sear-to-burn hot sauce; it shows how delicious a gourmet hot sauce can be. You actually taste the different fruits (chiles) in each blend. |
WHERE TO BUY IT: At fine retailers nationwide and BigPapiEnFuego.com. |

Varieties Of Big Papi Hot Sauce
These sauces are so good, you’ve got to try more than one.
Original En Fuego (Mild). A most wonderfully flavorful and mild hot sauce, Original goes with just about everything! The complex flavors come from cayenne, chipotle and habanero chiles, vinegar, lime juice, carrots, smashed garlic, cilantro, salt and seasonings. You can see the texture in the bottle: This is no limp hot sauce. It’s thick because of all the goodness in the bottle. Use it to add just a kick of heat to sauces, dips and your favorite recipes.
Monster Double En Fuego (Medium). Medium-hot has a green jalapeño flavor that pairs especially well with poultry dishes. Great flavors of jalapeño are blended with habanero and tomatillo; the fresh garlic and cilantro prevail as well. Other ingredients include vinegar, shallots, onion, lime juice, olive oil, salt and seasonings. You may wish to use Monster Double in burgers, tacos, soups, stews and other recipes. Or, for more heat, continue on to the next level.

Grand Slam En Fuego is XXX-tra hot, but it’s the best heat we’ve ever tasted.
|
Off The Wall Triple En Fuego (Hot). While Big Papi thinks that this one “knocks your Sox off,’ you can probably keep your sox on as you make a Bloody Mary or add heat to your favorite recipes. Here, the hot habanero chile is joined with the hottest—the naga jolokia chile—plus vinegar and salt. If you like hot wings, heat them up with Off The Wall Triple En Fuego. It’s also good with fried foods.
Grand Slam En Fuego (Extra Hot). The fieriest Big Papi hot sauce, it wows instead of burning. You can taste the smoky chipotles, which join habanero and cayenne chiles in the blend. There’s also some pepper extract to heat things up, along with soybean oil, smashed garlic, cilantro, lime juice, salt and spices. Big Papi says that this one is “for the professionals,” but even heat moderates like us enjoyed it.
A portion of Big Papi En Fuego's proceeds are donated to The David Ortiz Children’s Fund which benefits children in need of critical care throughout New England and David's native Dominican Republic. That, too, is hot stuff.
