WHAT IT IS: Yerba maté blended with sencha green tea.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Maté Sencha Shot combines the energizing power of yerba maté with the prophylactic antioxidants of green tea.
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s so much better for you than flavored energy drinks. And while we love Hiball Energy Drink, Ito-En delivers an antioxidant payload.

.Maté Sencha Shot: Our New Favorite Energy Drink

CAPSULE REPORT: One day six months ago, we were ready to keel over from fatigue. We were in the middle of a long day of walking and lugging. Then we had our first Maté Sencha Shot.

We were invigorated as if by magic, from one little 6.4-ounce steel can. And for zero calories.

The leading green tea producer in Japan, Ito-En, has combined the energizing power of South American yerba maté with the antioxidants of Japanese green tea.

The fusion is refreshing, whether chilled or at room temperature (and if you’re freezing in an over-air conditioned office, you can pour it into a cup and zap it). It’s like water to a drooping plant.

Yerba maté, or maté, is a wonder food. While certain health claims* have not yet been evaluated by the FDA, medical studies and anecdotal testimony from many consumers laud its energy-inducing properties. It helps with mental clarity, sustains energy levels and reduces fatigue. We’ll vouch for that!

*Maté is said to boost the immune system, relieve allergies, aid in weight control, engender better digestion, help with the treatment of diabetes, inhibit lipid peroxidation (free radicals remove electrons from the lipids in cell membranes, resulting in cell damage) and even fight halitosis.

Ito-En also makes a concentrated green tea Sencha Shot (no maté) that we buy by the case and drink several times daily; and Oolong Shot which has a different set of antioxidants than green tea.

Ito-En has been a Top Pick Of The Week before: Teas’ Tea line of bottled teas is a NIBBLE favorite.
