Milk & Krunchies: Gourmet Rice Krispies Treats
CAPSULE REPORT: Somewhere along the line, the original Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats recipe got corrupted. We have eaten some god-awful “gourmet” versions of Rice Krispies Treats—or at least, eaten half a bite before seeking out the nearest waste basket.
We figured that if [names of well-known stores withheld for the sake of good public relations] put them on the shelves, they had to be good. We would like to introduce these retailers—and every retailer—to Milk & Krunchies, a company that knows how to do it right.
As you can guess, when the charming box of pretty gourmet rice crispy treats arrived from Milk & Krunchies (the revised spellings steer clear of Kellogg’s trademark), we did not rush to devour them. But once we began, we couldn’t stop. These delicious updates of the classics, in basic and three flavor, with more on the way, are classy snacks and gifts.
Join us as we revisit Rice Krispies Treats, now a crispy adult treat that you may elect to share with deserving children—if you feel you can spare a bite. Read the full review below.

Milk & Krunchies Overview
If you’ve never made Rice Krispies Treats, it’s a pretty simple task. Gather together:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 10-ounce package marshmallows (about
40 regular marshmallows, or 4 cups
miniature marshmallows)
- 6 cups Rice Krispies
Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat, add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from the heat, add the Rice Krispies and stir until well coated. Then, with a buttered spatula, press the mixture into a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Let it cool and cut into 2-inch squares.
The recipe was invented in 1928 by Mildred Day and others in the home economics department at The Kellogg Company. It was created as a fund raiser-for the Camp Fire Girls, a nationwide American youth organization that was founded in 1910, two years before the founding of the Girl Scouts, a competitive organization (the Camp Fire Girls went co-ed in 1975, and is now the Camp Fire Boys and Girls).

DJ AM’s Toffee Mix, named after the late DJ, who was a partner in the business, has a milk chocolate and toffee topping. It was his favorite.
|
Over the years, recipe riffers added icing, chocolate chips, more miniature marshmallows, pretzels, dried fruit, candy corn, peppermint, coconut, nuts, jam, other cereal (Cheerios, Fruit Loops) and just about anything else within reach (gummi worms, licorice, Life Savers). Some were good ideas, some, especially in combination, were frightening, especially with margarine substituted for butter.
Enter two young women in Los Angeles, best friends both desiring a career switch—one from law, one from design. Bravo, Melissa Tong Cooper and Kathleen Takushi. While the world may not need another breakfast cereal, it certainly needs a great gourmet Rice Krispies Treat. Join us on Page 2 to check out the flavors.
