Nutty Girl Varieties
Original Rosemary Nut Mix
The original mix combines fresh-roasted almonds, pecans and walnuts with dried cranberries. The rosemary seasoning is lively; there’s a virtually undiscernable amount of brown sugar and sea salt, and butter to bind the seasonings to the nuts.
Sweet Nutty Girl Mix With Chocolate Chips
A new variety of Nutty Girl adds semisweet chocolate chips to the original recipe. In theory, this is a fine idea. However, Ms. Cary has found the tiniest chocolate chips imaginable—the size of the head of a large pin. These are no mini morsels—the size you can find in the supermarket—but miniscule micro morsels. They are smaller by far than anything else in the mix. As a result, they sink to the bottom of the serving dish, and even when one tries to grab up a few along with the nuts and cranberries, they slip through one’s fingers.

Sweet Nutty Girl adds teeny chocolate chips. |
This problem can easily be remedied by moving to mini chips; after we got a spoon and scooped the teensy weensy bits of chocolate into our mouth, the flavor was quite nice. But until the production change is made, we’d advise to stick with the original, and throw in a handful of your own chips.
The Health Benefits Of Nuts
Nuts are a good protein food. Yes, they have fats, but largely unsaturated, heart-healthy fats. (O.K., Nutty Girl adds some butter and brown sugar, too, but just enough butter so the seasonings stick.)
And nuts are a heart-healthy food. In 2003, the FDA approved the following claim for seven different types of nuts,* including the three in the Nutty Girl mix: “Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 oz per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.” If you’re on a heart health jag, walnuts are the best: Compared to other nuts, they have a significantly higher amount of alpha linolenic acid, a type of plant-derived omega 3 fatty acid, similar to that found in salmon, which many studies show lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) levels.
*Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts.
This doesn’t make Nutty Girl health food, per se; but if it’s a choice between reaching for the cheese sticks, the pretzels, the chips or the candy group, reach for the Nutty Girl. You can reach easily online. We’re not kidding when we suggest that, if you entertain a lot, you should buy it in bulk.
