Obsession Chocolates
When I was younger, I used to think that an obsession with anything wasn’t a good idea. I mean to say, how could it be construed as a plus if you were abnormally preoccupied with coin collecting or clothing previously worn by celebrities or bonsai trees? But age brings wisdom (or so they keep telling me), and after some time I discovered that peace of mind involved merely being obsessed with something truly worthwhile, like fine chocolates. I haven’t asked her directly about this, but I believe that Rebecca Flynn reached this conclusion herself a few years ago, probably shortly before she opened Obsession Chocolates.
Ms. Flynn has an interesting background, including stints as owner of an aviation software company and a personal chef, but these days she’s in the business of instant gratification through her lovely chocolate creations. If you’re in the vicinity of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, you can visit her boutique or the local Farmers’ Market (Obsession also sells there), but if not, you can simply order online.
What to order here? The Malted Milk Chocolate Sauce! But wait, you say, you wanted chocolates, not a chocolate sauce. That doesn’t matter; you need to order a jar of this anyway, because it’s fabulous. This tastes like a malted milk ball in sauce form. Ms. Flynn suggests using it over ice cream and claims that it makes a perfect chocolate malted, but I wouldn’t know; I’ve been too busy eating it off a spoon to use it for anything else.

Among the chocolates, go for the Italian Liqueur Shields, dark chocolate with a gently-spiked ganache center that isn’t too boozy, but has the great tastes of vanilla and citrus. I’m also partial to the Pear Panache, with milk chocolate, fresh Bosc pears and Poire William liqueur. Pear is a difficult flavor to capture, but you’ll find its delicate taste inside this piece. If you’d like something more mainstream (or non-alcoholic), try the Dark Coffee Heart, a great mix of two well-loved tastes.
For Mother’s Day, consider the pretty Chocolate Rose Box, a three-inch-square molded rose box in dark, milk or white chocolate. Remove the lid and there are two heart-shaped truffles inside. And if there’s a wedding in your future, the Wedding Cake Truffles would be fun and luscious favors for your guests.
See? It isn’t so terrible to be obsessed, after all; you just have to choose your obsessions as carefully as you do your chocolates.
