Tanteo: Tantalizing Flavored Tequila
CAPSULE REPORT: Adults who felt left out of the weekend’s trick-or-treating can claim their treat this week. Tanteo Tequila is the first spirit to become a Top Pick Of The Week—it’s that special. We tasted the three superpremium tequilas infused with chocolate, jalapeño and tropical flavors at a show filled with foods from big-name chefs. We were dazzled by Tanteo.
The line was launched less than a year ago by Jonathan Rojewski and Lincoln Mayne, who spent two years perfecting the recipes. Made with 100% blue agave tequila, Tanteo uses all natural ingredients to infuse the tequila, and it’s a magical marriage.
These are sipping tequilas and cooking tequilas—you’ll love flavoring sauces, desserts and marinades with them (more ideas in the full review). Pair them with mains or desserts that have similar flavor profiles. In terms of mixed drinks: If the possibilities aren’t endless, they’ll keep you busy for quite some time. The company offers recipes to start you off.

Tanteo Overview
Often, people with money decide to make another superpremium vodka (the Adams Beverage Group estimates that almost 300 new vodka brands were introduced in the U.S. from 2003 to 2008). Jonathan Rojewski, a former hedge fund manager, decided to make tequila instead. Smart! U.S. imports of tequila rose 48% from 2002 to 2008, thanks to the interest in premium tequila fueled by the first luxury tequila brand, Patrón, made from 100% blue agave; and the fact that the number one cocktail in America is...the Margarita.*

In 2006, the Mexican government first allowed its national spirit, tequila, to be infused with flavors. Distillers pounced on the opportunity and in short order produced tequilas flavored with citrus, coconut, coffee, chocolate, mango, pomegranate, strawberry and of course, jalapeño. But none we’ve had is anywhere near as elegant as Tanteo.
At Tanteo, the word is finesse, a beautifully infused superpremium tequila with an exquisite nose and palate. Rojewski opined that there was enough good añejo and reposado tequila for sipping. So he created a superpremium blanco—one that doesn’t burn, but is sizzling! (Read about the different types of tequila—blanco, joven, reposado, añejo and extra añejo.)
Company co-founder Lincoln Mayne, a designer who created the brand look, has ensured that the packaging is as high-impact and differentiated as what’s inside the bottle (though we’re a bit concerned that the cork, which is short with a loose fit, will abet evaporation—so drink up!). |

The one thing we’re not so keen on is the translation of the name. Tanteo, from the Spanish verb tantear, is slang for scoring sexually (it also means to feel one’s way, to size up and, according to the company, to succeed). You don’t need a spirit this good to score; slowly sipping this tequila straight, appreciating every aroma and flavor of its handmade, small-batch heritage (it is produced in the mountain town of Tequila), is a different pleasure entirely.
