How About Some Saké Sangria?

Overview

Sangria was first tasted in the United States in New York City, at the 1964 World’s Fair. The Spanish pavilion served the fruity wine punch to visitors. In the hot summer air, the refreshing drink was a hit.

From humble roots in Spain, Sangria has become a popular party drink around the world. While the Spanish recipe variations focused on red wine and fruits, white wine sangria soon evolved (a bit of an oxymoron, as sangria, the Spanish word for bleeding, refers to the red color of the drink).

Today, there are many different recipes, not necessary restricted to red or wine or fruits. Some people add spirits to the recipe. Some are carbonated with the addition of soda water (club soda).

We are adding saké, Japanese rice wine (pronounced SAH-kay—learn all about saké). Some recipes also have Japanese plum wine.

  • With their light flavors, saké and plum wine are perfect sangria ingredients.
  • Saké sangria is not just for Asian foods: It pares well with any fare.
  • Whether you’re barbecuing, relaxing poolside, entertaining friends or just looking to try something new and different, try one of these delicious recipes.
  • Thanks to Gekkeikan, maker of Gekkeikan sake and Kobai plum wine, and to mixologist Todd Richman, for these delicious sangrias. Gekkeikan is based in Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 1637, it is one of the world’s oldest extant companies. The name means “laurel wreath.”
  • Recipes serve 4 to 6 people.
