Chocolate Sauce

The only thing better than ice cream is ice cream topped with the best chocolate sauce. Photo by Lauri Patterson | IST.

WHAT IT IS: The finest chocolate sauces.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Made from top brands of chocolate and the best of everything; no HFCS or artificial anything.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Aside from being superb chocolate sauce (a.k.a. hot fudge sauce), it’s delicious “spoon candy.” When you need a chocolate fix, it substitutes for a great piece of fudge (it’s fudge consistency at room temperature).
WHERE TO BUY IT: Click the links to the individual reviews.
Gourmet Giveaway: Enter to win free food prizes from The Nibble Gourmet Market! This month, one lucky winner will receive a honey gift set from Honey Ridge Farms. Enter at TheNibbleGourmetMarket.com.

.The Best Chocolate Sauce

CAPSULE REPORT: This Top Pick Of The Week is short and sweet.

July is National Ice Cream Month. While the next few weeks' Top Picks will be devoted to interesting brands of ice cream, we’re starting off with the best thing to put on top of your ice cream:

Not a cherry, but the best chocolate sauce (a.k.a. hot fudge sauce).

(If you want the best maraschino cherry—truly a standout from the typical high fructose corn syrup versions—the best are from Tillen Farms. Buy a six-pack and give them as gifts.)

Back to ice cream toppings: They doesn’t get any better than these. All but one of the companies (Robert Lambert) also make wonderful butterscotch sauce. The sauces are made from top brands of chocolate and are all natural: no high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors or preservatives.

  • The King’s Cupboard Chocolate Sauce. These fine chocolate sauces are staples at THE NIBBLE. Certified kosher by OU, flavors include Bittersweet, Crème de Menthe, Espresso, Irish Cream, Milk Chocolate, Mint, Raspberry and Three Chilies (it rocks—hot chile heat against cold ice cream). There’s also an Organic Hot Fudge Sauce and a Sugar Free Chocolate Sauce that are as wonderful as the regular. Full review.
  • Somebody’s Mother’s. These chocolate sauces will please the fussiest gourmand. The dark Chocolate Sauce is a profound experience; the White Chocolate Pear William Sauce is an ecstasy you shouldn’t deny yourself. Full review.
  • Sassy Sauces. This line currently has four chocolate sauces—Bittersweet Chocolate, Milk Chocolate Caramel (different and delightful), Peanut Butter Chocolate and Spicy Dark Chocolate—plus Rum Caramel sauce. Full review.
  • Robert Lambert’s Chocolate Sauce. Robert Lambert is one of America’s great specialty food artisans. He’s one of only two artisans whose products have been Top Picks four different times. His website is under renovation through the end of July, but stop by after then to check out the chocolate sauces in Cognac, Coconut,  Deep Dark with Skye Vodka, Four Orange and Ginger & Pear Eau-de-vie. Full review.

These superb sauces can add excitement to many desserts—from pound cake to poached pears. Read the full reviews—they’re chock full of serving suggestions.
