Meat Ball Hero

WHAT IT IS: Heat-and-eat chicken meatballs in six flavors.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Natural chicken, raised with vegetarian feed, no hormones, no antibiotics.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Nicer-tasting than refined white sugar; dissolves easily in cold beverages; saves a lot of calories and carbs; a healthy sweetener.
WHERE TO BUY IT: At natural food stores and health food stores nationwide (check supermarkets, too); and online. See the store locator and take a very quick survey on the website to get $5.00 worth of coupons.

How many ways can you enjoy chicken meat balls?

As many ways as you can enjoy beef and pork meat balls—and more, because the lighter flavor and texture enable them to pair with lighter foods—added to a bowl of gazpacho, for example.

There are obvious recipe substitutions and the less obvious.

  • Hors d’Oeuvre: Your favorite cocktail meat ball recipe (with a dipper of sweet and spicy sauce, honey mustard, barbecue sauce or tzatziki); meat ball bruschetta (top conventional bruschetta with a meat ball half). Spread goat cheese or blue cheese on a baguette slice and top with a meat ball half. And don’t forget sliders.
  • Pasta, Pizza, Mac & Cheese, Chili: You know what to do! Beyond Italian pasta dishes, think of the meat balls atop broad noodles–like Meat Balls Stroganoff.
  • Sandwiches & Wraps: Make a regular meat ball hero. Beyond a meat ball hero, you can halve the meat balls and add to grilled cheese sandwiches, wrap sandwiches and pita. Substitute chicken meat balls for falafel. We added them to pita with hummus, feta, lettuce and tomato.
  • Soups: Add to any soup you find appealing. We’ve tried them in everything from chicken soup to tomato soup, as both a garnish and a main course soup.
  • Fusion Bimibap: Top a bowl of warm white rice with a fried egg and chicken meat balls instead of beef. You can add bean sprouts, cooked carrots, mushrooms, spinach, zucchini and other favorite vegetables.
