Red Raspberry Mad Hectic Oatmeal has a delicious sweet tartness. BYO banana. Photography by Hannah Kaminsky | THE NIBBLE. |
WHAT IT IS: Oatmeals flavored with nuts and dried fruits—and some with chocolate. |
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Organic oatmeal is enhanced with protein powder and flaxseed meal for a higher-fiber, higher-antioxidant, heart-healthier oatmeal. The fruits and nuts make it more appealing to those who don’t love “plain old oatmeal.” |
WHY WE LOVE IT: It’s fun, it’s delicious and it helps picky family members who won’t eat healthy oatmeal to get over it! And it’s ready in 60 seconds. |

Mad Hectic Oatmeal Flavors
Mad Hectic Oatmeal can be cooked on the stovetop, or in 60 seconds in the microwave. It’s easy to decide which flavors of Mad Hectic Oatmeal to try first.
Fruit & Nuts? Try Raspberry Almond or Strawberry Pecan. We love the crunch that the nuts provide.
No Nuts? Go for Red Raspberry, Chocolate Raspberry or French Chocolate.
Nuts Only? Your flavor is Almond Pecan, with the extra heart-healthy benefits of nuts. (In 2003, the FDA approved the following claim for almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts: “Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 oz per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.”)
Chocoholic? Yes, there are some antioxidants in Chocolate Raspberry and French Chocolate, and as we noted earlier, these kid-friendly breakfast flavors have enough melted chocolate bits to melt the resistance of any kid who won’t eat his or her oatmeal. But as you’ll see below, there’s a great use for these flavors among any chocolate-eaters. |
|
The two chocolate oatmeal flavors are quite dessert-like. It may be too much chocolate for adults, but the kids will love it.
|
You can enhance any of the favors with fresh fruit: the classic banana, strawberries, raspberries or other favorites. Many people add milk to their oatmeal, and the extra calcium is another nutrition bonus. But we also enjoyed eating these chewy, textured, flavorful oatmeals “straight up.”
Oatmeal For Dessert
The very dessert-like Chocolate Raspberry and French Chocolate are so rich and chocolaty, they could easily be served for dessert, plain or with a dab of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
These two oatmeal flavors remind us of Indian Pudding, a favorite hot pudding made with cornmeal and molasses. Tell your family they’re having “Scottish Pudding” for dessert. (In fact, there are numerous recipes for Scottish puddings using grains and fruit. Here’s a barley pudding with currants and raisins, as well as many steamed pudding recipes that are cakelike, not what Americans call pudding).
Try a flavor or two. You may find yourself giving it as gifts.
