Introduction To Jeni’s Ice Creams
“Try our latest batch flavor, Cucumber Honeydew with Cayenne,” trumpets Jeni’s home page. “It’s available in shops only for a short time.” That, ladies and gents, sums up the excitement of artisan ice cream: fresh, of the moment, ephemeral and beguiling. If Cucumber Honeydew doesn’t appeal to you, there are other seasonal flavors (Apricot, Lemon and Blueberries, Goat Cheese With Roasted Red Cherries, Sweet Corn and Black Raspberries, Wildberry Lavender...) and the standard repertoire, which is by no means standard.
Co-founders Jeni Britton Bauer and Charly Bauer are husband-and-wife artisanal ice cream makers. Jeni became inspired to make artisan ice creams while working at a patisserie; her techniques draw on the practices of a traditional pastry kitchen, using a cross of French, American and Italian techniques. The doors opened in 2002, in Columbus’s historic North Market, where the Saturday farmers market provided ideas and ingredients for new flavors (and still does!).

Jeni’s Point Of View
As with most artisans, Jeni’s reaches into the local countryside for fresh ingredients, supporting local farmers. The company buys responsibly-grown products from around the world (cacao for chocolate doesn’t grow in the U.S., after all—save for tiny amounts in Hawaii). The milk and cream are organic Ohio dairy, from grassfed cows.
Jeni’s vision—to make ice cream, gelato, yogurt and sorbet that are less sweet and more flavorful—brought her fame in her home town of Columbus, Ohio and beyond: Jeni has become the ice cream darling of the national food media. And justly deserved, too, as you’ll read in the next section.
