WHAT IT IS: A special line of “gourmet granola bars” that are more like dense nut tortes. |
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Enough protein to be a meal replacement, a good source of dietary fiber, all raw and very exciting flavors. |
WHY WE LOVE IT: Vibrant flavors (chocolate, lemon, mint, mocha), great crunch, total happiness (well, there are carbs). |

Flavors Of Olympia Granola Bars
First, a minor gripe that needs fixing. The eight flavors of of granola bars are currently divided among three categories: Coffee House Bars (brown labels), Sunshine Bars (orange label—there’s only one) and Trail Bars (yellow labels). Studying the ingredients labels of all eight bars, it took us a few minutes to figure out the system, which makes no sense. Here goes:
Flavors with classic trail mix ingredients—nuts, oats and chocolate morsels—are “Trail Mix Bars.” Add coffee and tea ingredients and you have “Coffee House Bars.” But a coffee house could still sell Trail Mix Bars or Sunshine Bars. And why make a new category for “Sunshine Bars,” when the bar, Lemon Chamomile is an herbal tea? Green Tea Zest is a Coffee House Bar, so why not Lemon Chamomile? Confused yet?
We suggest that the categories be removed as they only confuse consumers, who have better things to do with their time than study the issue for 10 minutes, as we did. And now, on to the good eatin’.
- Almond Chocolate Granola Bar. Like eating a dense chocolate coconut almond bar—or torte. We are happy.
- Chocolate Peanut Granola Bar. This is the only bar that substitutes another nut for the almonds, and the only flavor we weren’t crazy about (perhaps raw peanuts aren’t as dazzling as raw almonds). It’s OK, but lacking in the vivid flavors the other bars bring to the table.
- Espresso Almond Chocolate Granola Bar. Love chocolate? Love coffee? Order several—it’s high on our reorder list.
- Green Tea Zest Granola Bar. A nice bar, but the citrus in Lemon Chamomile is far more vibrant than the orange flavor here. Note to Olympia: more orange!
- Lemon Chamomile Granola Bar. Bright and lemony; a favorite.
- Mocha Mint Granola Bar. We love chocolate mint. The chocolate is more subtle here than with Turtle Mocha, but it’s nice, and the mint level is just right.
- Roasted Almond Granola Bar. The purest of flavors and also the crunchiest. The choice for those who want to keep it simple.

- Turtle Mocha Granola Bar. Spiritual cousin to a nutty, crunchy mocha brownie, this seductress is our favorite.
From snacks to stocking stuffers, you won’t go wrong with Olympia Granola Bars. The only wrong is not ordering enough.
