They may look big, but these nicely-sized whoopie pies—better for the waistline as well as better for the palate—are half the size of the standard, four-inch whoopie. Photography by Jerry Deutsch | THE NIBBLE. |
WHAT IT IS: Elegant whoopie pies. |
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Not overstuffed monsters, these two-inch whoopie pies, bursting with natural flavors, are just the right size for an indulgent treat. |
WHY WE LOVE IT: The cake is great—even red velvet, which we typically find ho hum—and the buttercream filling beats all the others out there. |

Whoopie Pie Flavors
The original whoopie pie was chocolate devil’s food cake with vanilla filling.
While some whoopie pie producers make dozens of flavors—from Black Forest to Caramel Apple and Creamsicle—WannaHavaCookie limits its offerings to the most popular flavors and does them well.
- Chocolate Whoopie Pie can be sandwiched with chocolate, mint, peanut butter, raspberry or vanilla buttercream. The tender chocolate cake with mint, raspberry and peanut butter fillings are our personal favorite.
- Red Velvet Whoopie Pie can be filled with chocolate, raspberry or vanilla filling (the latter two are the best-selling whoopies). We are not fans of red velvet cake in general—there’s not enough distinctive flavor for us—but these excellent red velvets have made us realize that you just have to hunt down the good ones.

We’ll gladly eat all the flavors, but particularly love Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Peanut Butter (above) and Chocolate Raspberry Whoopie Pies.
|
- Vanilla Whoopie Pie can be filled with chocolate or vanilla buttercream. While they’re not shown on the website, larger orders can be customized with other flavors, such as raspberry or peanut butter.
- Lemon Whoopie Pie, the spring seasonal special, is delicious lemon cake filled with lemon ginger buttercream. Can we expect a Pumpkin Whoopie Pie for fall?
Quality Alert
Note that some recipes for whoopie pies use a filling of vegetable shortening (think Crisco) instead of buttercream. There are bakers who obviously sell a lot of Crisco whoopie pies to people who are happy to eat them, and Oreo cookie filling, another application of sweetened Crisco, has many fans. But you have to ask why anyone who knows the difference between good food and processed food would want to eat hydrogenated cottonseed oil (the name Crisco derives from “crystallized cottonseed oil” and the product was originally designed for making soap) as a cake filling.
Eschew that vegetable oil filling, dear reader, and read labels (or ask) before you buy.
Whoopie Pie Festival
Whoopie worshippers should know that in January, the governor of Maine was petitioned to declare the whoopie pie as Maine’s Official State Dessert. Perhaps that will happen on June 26th, at the second-annual Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, held in Dover-Foxcroft, a town in the center of the state.
At the 2010 Maine Whoopie Pie Festival , the governor will declare the day “Maine Whoopie Pie Day” and DownEast Magazine will launch the book, “Making Whoopies: The Official Whoopie Pie Book.” You’ll be able to design your own whoopie pie, mixing and matching cakes and fillings, enter whoopie pie eating contests and run it all off in an “Earn Your Whoopie Pie” 5k race.
Or, order a bunch of WannaHavaCookie whoopie pies and hold your own festival!
