WHAT IT IS: Gourmet cupcakes in a jar. |
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Cupcake material is layered in Mason jars—more like a mini-cake in a jar, starting with a layer of cake, a layer of buttercream, more cake, more buttercream and a very fun topping. |
WHY WE LOVE IT: The cupcakes last longer in airtight Mason jars than they would in any other kind of wrapping—five days and still moist! See more reasons in the main review. |

Cupcakes In A Jar Varieties
You can buy as many cupcakes as you want, selecting from the 14 flavors of the month or the 4 flavors of the day. If you prefer any of the bakery’s 178 flavors that are not featured, there’s a minimum order of 2 dozen of that flavor.
We chose an even dozen of mixed flavors, and each one was a winner. The cake and buttercream are almost uniformly excellent.
- Bon Bon Cupcake. This cupcake is a seductress: We devoured it instantly, so we can’t even show a photo. Imagine a top-quality semisweet chocolate bar melted and poured into the Mason jar so that when it hardens, it lines the entire inside of the jar. That’s the “shell” of the bon bon. The chocolate cake and white frosting layered inside are the bon bon “filling.” So, it’s a chocolate bonbon and a cupcake in one. It’s sheer cupcake-fix heaven. The chocolate cake here, and in all the chocolate varieties, is as good as it gets: some deep chocolate, some devil’s food.

Delicious citrus cake and buttercream frosting are topped with three Sour Patch Kids as a bonus (and they tasted good!).
|
- Buttered Popcorn Cupcake. Fine yellow cake with a buttery-flavored frosting decorated with buttered popcorn. New, different and delightful.
- Goobers Cupcake, M&M Cupcake & Raisinettes Cupcake. These are chocolate cupcakes with milk chocolate frosting, each topped with the eponymous candy. Even more fun, the candies are layered inside the cupcake for a surprise and extra flavor, crunch and fun.
- Good & Plenty Cupcake. Superb licorice frosting on yellow cake gives us the inspiration to bake a batch of these ourselves! A real treat for the licorice lover.
- Hot Tamale Cupcake: Red velvet cake with cinnamon frosting, sprinkled with Hot Tamale candies. This is the one cupcake we didn’t get to eat. Some red velvet fiend snatched it and didn’t report back.
- Junior Mint Cupcake. As mint lovers, this is our only complaint: The mint in the frosting is too subtle. If the cupcake says “Junior Mint,” one would expect a bit more mint intensity in the frosting. Please.
- Peanut Butter Cup Cupcake. Topped with chocolate sprinkles, chopped peanuts and a quarter of a PB cup, this cupcake was a bit different in that it has a third layer. Peanut butter is layered with peanut butter buttercream and chocolate cake. The result more peanut-buttery than chocolatey, but it’s a find for PB lovers. For a chocolate cupcake with peanut accents, get the Goobers Cupcake.
- Sno-Caps Cupcake. Chocolate buttercream on devil’s food cake, garnished with Sno-Caps nonpareil candy. Who could complain?
- Sour Patch Kids Cupcake. Hmm, we thought: Are we going to like this? We’d never buy Sour Patch Kids candy. Surprise: The citrus cake and butter cream are very sophisticated and tasty and the candy tasted good!
- Whopper Cupcake. Dark chocolate cake, milk chocolate frosting and Whopper malted milk ball candy on top. (See photo at right.) For us, the true Home Of The Whopper.

When you eat your cupcake with a spoon, every bit includes cake and frosting. |
It’s interesting how the different flavored frostings make the same chocolate and yellow cakes seem different. That’s just part of the magic at work with Yummy Cupcakes, one of the most enjoyable products we’ve tasted this year.
