Strawberry Basil Sorbet

Strawberry Basil Sorbet was our favorite sorbet flavor: a stunning combination of fruit and herb. Photo by Shyman | IST.

WHAT IT IS: French-style artisan ice creams.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Made in small batches from the freshest, finest ingredients. The goat’s milk flavors, which are healthier than cow’s milk, are rich and creamy with no “goaty” taste. You’ll be amazed.
WHY WE LOVE IT: The most exquisite flavors with traditional and unusual flavor choices (Caramel with Sea Salt, Lavender, Saffron).

Flavors Of Delicieuse Sorbet

Sorbet is a lighter, non-dairy, lower-calorie alternative to ice cream, a “tour de normande” (palate-cleanser) between strong-flavored courses and more refreshing overall. But as thrilled as we were with almost every flavor of ice cream, we did not find the sorbets to be as magical. As much as the names on the containers called out to us like sirens on the rocks—Apricot Rosemary, Hibiscus-Raspberry and Lychee, for example—the songs (flavors) didn’t resonate quite as irresistibly to us on the palate.

Which is not to say that these are not fine products; only that if you plan to order online, in the opinion of this one reviewer, there are more wonderful choices to be had among the ice creams.

Strawberry Basil Sorbet was our favorite—and now, we can’t wait until it’s strawberry season to whip up a batch of our own. Mango Magnifique Sorbet was lovely, but it’s not a challenge for most of us to find a good mango sorbet. Carrot Orange, Fig and Hibiscus Sorbets were charming, without engendering a desire to polish off the pint. Lemon Basil Sorbet wasn’t quite as enchanting as the strawberry version, much as we love lemon sorbet. Similarly, Apricot Rosemary Sorbet didn’t enchant when we hoped it should, nor did Pear, one of our favorite sorbet flavors. Muscat Wine Sorbet, a tempting concept, was merely nice. Unlike the Wine Cellar Sorbet line, there was no noticeable wine flavor.

Avocado ice cream is either your thing or it isn’t. To us, avocado should be a savory ice cream flavor; and while Delicieuse does make a version with hot chiles, the sweet, creamy avocado sorbet we had (the texture of the avocado fruit makes the sorbet seem like ice cream) evoked sweet guacamole. (For some insights into savory ice cream, see our article on cheese ice cream.)

There are 22 flavors of sorbet, however; we tried fewer than half of them, and look forward to visiting Redondo Beach to try the rest. Flavors like Banana, Geranium Flower, Green Apple, Jasmine Tea, Mint, Pear with Chocolate and Yogurt are still singing out to us.

Delicieuse Café

One reason to make Redondo Beach, California a destination vacation (it’s in greater Los Angeles, on the Pacific Coast midway between Marina Del Ray and Long Beach) is to sit at the Delicieuse Café and try all the flavors. That’s no small task; there are more than 100 artisanal ice cream and sorbet flavors; while not all are available at any one time, most assuredly, more are available at one time than most people who are not eating contest winners could manage. There are also ice cream and wine pairings, and to balance it all, a menu of savory fare.

Plan carefully: The café is only open for limited hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The rest of the time, Patricia Sampson and her team are busy making the wonderful ice creams and sorbets.
