WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: You may have had cream of peanut soup, curried peanut soup or Thai peanut soup, but this line offers all three. |
WHY WE LOVE IT: Just combine the soup mix with a quart of chicken stock and heat. It couldn’t be easier. |

Peanut Soup Varieties
The three peanut soup varieties run the gamut from tame to spicy to very spicy. Our tasters who didn’t like spicy foods loved the Traditional, but not the spicy African Piri-Piri and Thai Curry soups. It was the opposite with those who preferred spicy foods: They found the Traditional Peanut Soup to be bland, and called for more of the spicy varieties.
- We liked all three, but felt the Traditional Peanut Soup needed some kind of garnish—salty peanuts or chopped green onions to give its mild flavor a boost.
- By the same token, Thai Curry Peanut Soup, which has a huge amount of curry powder flavor, is hot (though not burning). It needs a cooling counterpoint. (We’ve suggested a few below.)
- African Piri-Piri Peanut Soup has just the right amount of spice. If you’re going to try just one of the soups, go for it.

Serving Suggestions
Peanut soup is hearty. You can enjoy the soups as is, but they’ll show even better with a bit of garnish:
- Chopped green onions
- Crunchy garlic croutons
- Chopped salted or honey-roasted peanuts (for the Traditional variety)
- Shaved Cheddar or other semihard cheese
- Sour cream, crème fraîche or mascarpone (for the two spicy varieties) with snipped chives
The soups can be served for a casual lunch or a fancy dinner. As we were finishing our bowl of Traditional Peanut Soup, we thought: You could garnish this one with a dab of grape jelly. That might be cutting edge for most people, but you could certainly enjoy a jelly sandwich (or a PB&J) with it.
With the other two varieties, we recommend a nice, savory chicken, turkey or roast beef on whole wheat.
