WHY WE LOVE IT: We feel as if we’re eating tomato sauce instead of corn syrup sauce.

Sir Kensington’s Gourmet Scooping Ketchup

A newcomer to the market, Sir Kensington is a brand with a lot of  personality. The fictitious Sir Kensington is a Victorian-era Oxford graduate and culinarian with a graduate thesis on spiced sauces. The company website is dedicated to details of his life.

But it’s the ketchup comparison that catches the eye—and the palate. When you see the ingredients of Sir Kensington’s side-by-side with Heinz, you understand what gourmet ketchup is all about:

  • Vine-ripened pear tomato purée vs. tomato concentrate
  • Agave nectar, honey and raw brown sugar vs. high fructose corn syrup
  • Apple cider vinegar vs. white vinegar
  • Coriander, lime juice, allspice and whole onions vs. salt and onion powder

  • Green onions, Dijon mustard, chipotle, cilantro and cayenne vs. “spices”

There’s a “classic” Sir Kensington’s and a “spiced” version. As with Montebello Kitchens, the spicy version is the one to try if you’re only trying one. With layers and layers of flavor—as you can see in the ingredients list above—it will give you a new appreciation of ketchup.

If you haven’t thought of ketchup as a holiday gift, the red-filled jars tied with a green ribbon are pitch-perfect, and the contents will open up many eyes as they catch up with [gourmet] ketchup.
