WHAT IT IS: Artisan-baked cookies and brownies, conventional and organic.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: It’s artisan but not arty; the focus on family favorites—brownies, chocolate chip cookies, gingerbread, cowboy cookies, chubsters, peanut butter cookies and other favorites.
WHY WE LOVE IT: We love the crusty tops of the brownies, the buttery goodness of the cookies and the ability to send organic gifts to organic-only friends.

The basic collection of crisp cookies is so tempting, the biggest challenge is choosing. Or just have a cookie party and order them all—with 6 cookies per bag and half a cookie per person, you can have a party for 12.

  • Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies, embellished with semisweet chocolate morsels and crystallized ginger.
  • Chocolate Chubsters, semi-sweet and white chocolate morsels, salted peanuts, and golden raisins (sultanas).
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies, with salted peanuts and chocolate chips.
  • Coconut Lime Coolers, lime shortbread accented with coconut and dusted with confectioners’ sugar.
  • Cowgirl Cookie, a crunchy oatmeal cookie with pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and dried cranberries.

* A sablé is a type of shortbread, a round butter cookie. It originated in Caen, a town in the French province of Normandy. Sablés are refrigerator cookies: like shortbread, the dough is refrigerated in logs until it becomes hard. It is then sliced into rounds and baked (see the different types of cookies). Sablés are also known as Breton Biscuits. Sablé is the French word for sand; it refers to the crumbly texture of the cookie. They are made with vanilla extract but can be enhanced with just about any cookie flavor. Popular additions include almonds, citrus zest, coconut and cocoa. For the holidays, the edges can be rolled in red and green sanding sugar.

Brownies & Bars

As crisp as the cookies are, the bars are dense and moist.

  • Congo Bar, chocolate, nuts and coconut in a chewy blonde dough.
  • Decadence Bar, a rich brownie base melded with chocolate chip cookie dough on top.
  • Raspberry Streusel Bar, a favorite of ours—a divine combination of buttery pastry, raspberry jam and streusel—is one we didn’t get to taste. They’ll be on our next order.
  • Super Fudge Brownies are very moist and fudgy, with an attractive crisp top. The White Chocolate Peppermint Brownie is iced with dark and white chocolate.

Organic Cookies & Brownies

The organic line includes our favorite Aztec Chocolate Sablé Cookies, Chocolate Chunk Brownies, Cowboy Cookies (oatmeal with coconut, raisins and chocolate chunks), Honey Graham Crackers and Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookies. There’s also an organic Trip Mix (as how many of us are on a real trail?).

Thank heavens for artisan bakers like Erin Saltsman: Every bite is a treat.
