Overview

Forget those red candy-coated apples. Fine caramel- and chocolate-coated apples are what the palate demands for a gourmet Halloween.

Swiss Maid Chocolate Caramel Apples

These delicious candy apples are Granny Smiths, dipped in homemade caramel and then in chocolate. The apple in the photo, dipped in excellent white chocolate then dusted with cinnamon and sparkling sugar, is like apple pie and ice cream on a stick.

The Turtle Caramel Apple, covered with deep milk chocolate and pecans, also left us wanting more. Siblings include Peanut Caramel Apple,  Pecan Caramel Apple and Rocky Mountain Caramel Apple (an apple covered with almonds and milk and white chocolate). There’s also a plain caramel apple for purists.

These are not ginormous apples, but large Granny Smiths that make for a more sensible portion size. What makes them better than other chocolate caramel apples is the very high quality of Swiss Maid’s caramel and chocolate. The apples are never cloying or over-the-top; they’re just perfect.

DeBrito’s Chocolate Caramel Apples

One day we are going to get to Hollister, California, and eat all 46 varieties of DeBrito’s chocolate caramel apples.

These are fancy-pants apples, totally covered with treats and tied with a big, beautiful cloth bow.

The apples are a bit larger than the Swiss Maid apples. Our favorite apple (well, we've only had a few of the 46 flavors), is the seasonal Pumpkin Pie Apple. It’s a perfect Halloween flavor, as are the Coconut Mounds (drizzled with half chocolate and half orange-hued butterscotch), Grannyola Apple (granola and white chocolate), the colorful M&M Monster and Toffee Apple.

For people who don’t eat chocolate, there’s a selection with yogurt coating.
