WHAT IT IS: Wholesome, healthy cake-like cookies called Bite-lettes. The line is vegan, cholesterol free and certified kosher; several flavors are gluten free.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Made with whole grains and “whole sweeteners”—evaporated cane juice and fruit juice instead of refined sugar. Yet, delicious and satisfying.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Good taste, good for you. If you want a cookie, cake or a muffin, for that matter, there’s no need to do damage when do nicely.

What’s In Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food

Laura’s Bite-lettes taste like muffins—or perhaps more accurately, like moist, dense cake. Canola oil makes the product cholesterol-free; evaporated cane juice and fruit juice are used as healthier sweeteners. The body of the “cake” is built on unbleached natural flour with unsweetened coconut for texture (not flavor—if you don’t like the taste of coconut, fear not).

Other ingredients include soy protein isolate (non GMO), a highly refined or purified form of soy protein that helps to deliver 2g protein per serving; and soy powder (also non GMO), finer than soy flour and with a better flavor for baking. Baking powder, natural flavorings and sea salt round out the ingredients. Two satisfying pieces have 100-120 calories (similar to many plain packaged cookies) and 4g-6g fat, 0 cholesterol, 88mg-100mg sodium. If you eat four, you’ll have eaten the equivalent of a piece of cake with far fewer calories, bad fat (unless you’ve used olive oil or canola oil) and possibly bad sugar (honey and maple syrup are “good sugars,” but that’s an article for another day).

Flavors

There are currently ten flavors, of which three are made with brown rice flour and are gluten free, and one is made with oats and no wheat flour.

  • Anna Banana Split Bite-Lettes. A favorite of the reviewers, it tastes like banana cake, something we can never find enough!
  • Better Brownie Bite-lettes (gluten-free). Similar to the Xtreme Chocolate Fudge Bite-lettes (wheat-free, below), without the extra zap of cocoa powder. The Xtremes also have more date flavor. The choice is up to you: chocolate with prominent chewy coconut texture here, versus more chocolate and date flavor in the Xtreme. (Our preference is for the latter, but there is no wrong decision.)
  • Charlotte’s Chocolate Chip Bite-lettes (gluten-free). Made with brown rice flour and chocolate chips, this is a good and healthy chocolate chip experience.
  • Cole’s Cashew Chocolate Chip Bite-lettes (gluten-free). Here, cashew butter imparts a lovely nuttiness to the rice flour base, punctuated by lots of chocolate chips. The cashew butter makes this one flavor drier in style—a cookie rather than cake.
  • Grandma’s Gingerbread Bite-lettes. Rolled oats, date paste, healthy blackstrap molasses and lots of ginger flavor.
  • Lemon-Vanilla Bite-lettes. Wonderfully lemony with a hint of coconut flavor. Made on a base of rolled oats and dates.
  • Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bite-lettes. Like an oatmeal chocolate chip cake with the texture of coconut, but not the flavor.
  • Oatmeal Raisin Bite-lettes. Like an oatmeal-raisin-date cookie turned into a cake.
  • Sally’s Raisin Bite-lettes (gluten-free). Like a sweet raisin cake, made with brown rice flour and raisins.
  • Xtreme Chocolate Fudge Bite-lettes (wheat free). Cocoa, chocolate chips, rolled oats, oat flour and date paste marry to create a delicious chocolate date confection. They’re nothing like Uli Mana’s Chocolate Date Rolls, a recent Top Pick Of The Week, but are just as welcome. If chocolate and dates sound like an unusual combination to you, it’s as great as chocolate and raspberries.

At the end of this tasting, we felt we had eaten lots and lots of cake, muffins or whatever the Bite-lettes mean to you. But we felt good about it. Thanks, Dr. Laura.
