With the excitement of getting ready for Thanksgiving, you’d think that November would be National Turkey Month. It isn’t—June is (most likely because everyone is going to eat turkey in November and December anyway, so the National Turkey Federation has presented a live turkey and two dressed turkeys to the President each June—you may remember the publicity episode on The West Wing where C.J. ended up with the live ones in her office). “Turkey Day” defaults to Thanksgiving, and this month’s official food holidays are all healthy, perhaps to make up for the big feast: good nutrition, pecans, peanut butter and pepper. But if you want to celebrate something sweet and gooey, there are plenty of daily food holidays, honoring cake, candy, chocolates, doughnuts, lemon creme pie, mousse, nachos, pizza, sundaes, vanilla cupcakes and more. Oh, about that turkey: Read the differences among heritage, organic and wild turkeys, as well as the history of the turkey.
In this issue is packed with foods you can enjoy for the holidays and give as gifts. You’ll have to wait for our December issue, though, for our Low Calorie/No Calorie gift list.
Content is added daily—check back to see what’s new.
Our Table of Contents begins with favorite articles from our archives that celebrate the month’s food holidays or special events. The current month’s articles follow; projected publication dates are provided. Foods that are kosher [K], organic [O], sugar free [SF], etc. are coded. See the full list of codes at the bottom of this Table of Contents.
